This is the dramatic moment resistance fighters clashed with Burmese state soldiers who were patrolling a river in Myanmar.

Footage shows the troops from the Myo Hla People's Defense Force hiding in the undergrowth before taking aim and firing at junta forces in the Shwegu township of Kachin State on September 5.

The militia unloaded their firearms and retreated before opposing soldiers could retaliate. Local media claimed the military council suffered casualties, but did not specify how many were killed.

Myanmar has suffered ongoing unrest and spiralled towards civil war following the removal of well-liked leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a military coup in February 2021 when the army seized power.

The United Kingdom advises organisations against carrying out business in the country and has imposed financial sanctions on a large number of individuals with links to the regime.
