Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 at Balmoral, her holiday home in Scotland, today (September 8), announced by Buckingham Palace and the BBC.

A rainbow formed over the crowds forming outside prior to the announcement of her death.

Queen Elizabeth stood as the second-longest serving sovereign monarch in world history, sitting on the throne for 70 years.

Queen Elizabeth’s eldest son and next in line of royal succession, Prince Charles and his wife, Camila Parker Bowles, headed to Balmoral along with her sons Prince Andrew and Prince Edward before the announcement of her death. Prince William, third in line to the throne, also headed before the announcement to Scotland to see his grandmother along with his wife Kate Middleton and his brother, Prince Harry. The queen's only daughter, Princess Anne, was already in Scotland and is now at Balmoral.

Queen Elizabeth has been at Balmoral since July.

On Tuesday (September 6), Lizz Truss became the UK's Prime Minister after the queen invited her to form a government at Balmoral
