Zookeeps have built new toilets for a pair of giant anteaters 'to keep them healthy' in Thailand.

Staff of the Khon Kaen Zoo assembled the bathroom area - which consists of a pool where the anteaters can also take a dip - reportedly to prevent the spread of germs inside the enclosure.

Footage shows the pair of insectivores named Haiko and Nulek frolicking and cooling off in the water.

Zoo director Narongwit Chotchoi said the project was completed keeping in mind the animals' natural behaviour.

In the wild, anteaters have been recorded wallowing in mud as the bath is believed to remove stray ants or termites clinging to their fur. Similarly, they have been seen enjoying a hosing down in captivity, with the creatures even jostling to be drenched by their caretakers.

The Khon Kaen Zoo is open to tourists daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
