Footbridge washed away by raging river as Typhoon Inday brings rain in the Philippines

This is the dramatic moment a footbridge was washed away as Typhoon Inday brought heavy rain and flash floods to the Philippines.

The metal structure was pulled from its attachments as a swollen river pounded it in the town of Mandaue in Cebu province, the Philippines, on September 9.

Onlookers could be heard gasping in shock at the ferocity of the raging muddy deluge, which also ripped homes from their foundations and dragged them away further downstream.

Resident Lhomer Ogama, who recorded the video, said: 'There were floods along the river and a lot of damage. The footbridge was swept away.'

A number of other homes caught in the overflow from when the river burst its banks were also flooded and later pulled into the deluge. There were no reported casualties from the incidents.

Inday has strengthened from a severe tropical storm into a typhoon as it moved across the Philippine Sea on Saturday morning.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said its packing maximum sustained winds increased of 120 km/h.
