STORYLINE:

Coordinator of the Union of Fishermen's Committees in Gaza, Zakaria Bakr, said that the Israeli authorities have prevented the export of fish from the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing, since the end of the last aggression on the Strip.

Bakr said that the Israeli authorities limit the amount of fish exported from Gaza to the West Bank to 20 tons, as each fishmonger used to export 10 tons per month.

Bakr said that most of the fish are very expensive, and there is no market for them in the Gaza Strip, and they are exported to the West Bank

Ice has become the most feasible for fishermen therefore the shelf-life of fish can be prolonged during the summer

The freezing process alone is not a method of preservation. It is merely the means of preparing the fish for storage at a suitably low temperature. In order to produce a good product, freezing must be accomplished quickly, thus freezing is a separate process from low temperature storage.
