A fine example of the Traditional Thatchers art seen at Sleepy Thatch, Sunny Thatch and Vine cottages at East Prawle village in the South Hams region of the county of Devon UK. The Grade two listed historic buildings are protected by law from unauthorised external changes which may affect the character and history. In Devon the traditional material used is wheat to make the roof. Water reed can also be used. The roof materials in this region would be expected to last 25 to 30 years before replacement. The ridge part where we see a family of ducks and ducklings should be renewed or repaired every 8 years. Once upon a time poorer folk would have thatched roofs and wealthier folk would have slate or tile roofs. Nowadays it is the other way around.
