A Thai woman has been jailed for two years for wearing a pink dress that mocked the country's queen.

Jatuporn Saeoueng, 23, wore the pink gown at a spoof catwalk show mocking the monarch's wife Queen Suthida an anti-establishment rally in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 30, 2020. It coincided with a fashion show held by Princess Sirivannavari for her label.

Protest leaders also wore crop tops to insult the controversial king Maha Vajiralongkorn - best known for wearing bizarre skimpy outfits in public, throwing topless birthday parties for his pet dog and reportedly living in an Alpine hotel with a harem of young beauties.

Vajiralongkorn’s wife, Queen Suthida, dresses in elegant silk fashions for formal and public occasions.

The satirical show was staged on the same night that Princess Sirivannavari held an upmarket fashion, which was reportedly funded by THB13 million (US$416,000) from state coffers, to promote the launch of her obscure label's latest collection.

It appeared to be a direct criticism of the structural abuse of public funds as well as the princess's privilege and wealth. Criticism of the royal family is an offence in the country which still has archaic lese majeste laws effectively banning freedom of speech and expression.

Jatuporn was arrested in July last year and judges at the Bangkok Criminal Court this morning September 12 sentenced her to two years in prison for insulting the monarchy and violating the Public Assembly Act. She was also ordered to pay a fine of 1,000 THB (27 USD).

The young woman's lawyers said they are now applying for temporary release on bail but she will be taken directly to jail if the appeal fails.

According to the thaipoliticalprisoners website, a complaint was filed against Jatuporn by a royalist, who claimed she 'ridiculed the Queen by wearing a pink Thai traditional dress to the fashion show and walking along a red carpet under an umbrella held by another protester'.

Two other protests were held in the city on the same night - one at the offices of the pro-establishment Nation Multimedia Group and another at the Pathum Wan Intersection where police fired water cannons in a previous demonstration.

Since the upswell of anti-establishment protests, restrictions put in place during the pandemic have helped to quell the unrest.
