'It was worth 27-hour wait - if I could queue again, I would': Man's emotional reaction to Queen lying in state

Some of the first mourners to have seen Queen Elizabeth II lying in state in Westminster Hall in central London have spoken of their experience.

One middle-aged man said: “That was something I didn’t expect, lost the plot. Emotions I’ve never felt, probably close to my mum passing away. And that was a lot like saying goodbye to her again.

“The Guardsmen, the Beefeaters, the fact that this is so historic. I’ve never ever experienced that before. The moment I saw Her Majesty there, with the Guard of Honour … I really choked up. I can’t believe I’ve been so moved by that.

"It was so worth 27 hours, since 3 pm yesterday, waiting for that moment, not having any idea what it would be. If I could go round and join that queue I’d do it all again. It was magnificent."

Another woman draped in the Union Jack said; "I was crying inside. It reminded me of when my mum died. I was choked. I was crying."

The Queen's funeral takes place at Westminster Abbey on Monday (September 19).
