Thai doctors have urged the government to tell its worried citizens to stop wearing face masks.

The group of physicians from Bangkok's prestigious Chulalongkorn University submitted a proposal to Minister of Health Anutin Charnvirakul on September 11, citing that masks lower oxygen in the body, thus affecting the immune system.

The medics also launched a campaign calling for officials to ‘reassure the people that Covid-19 is normal' alongside an online petition for the public to show its support.

Dr Atthaphon Sukhonthapirom Na Phatthalung, professor at the top university's faculty of medicine, said: ‘Only patients must wear masks to protect others. It is time that the government reassures the people that the situation has normalised.

‘Wearing a mask makes the oxygen in the body lower. This affects the functioning of the brain and a higher carbon dioxide in the system. It disrupts the functioning of cells in the body. With lower oxygen, comes lower immunity.'

Aside from admitting that the pandemic has eased, the doctors also wanted the officials to start as role models so the public would not be intimidated unmasking.

He said: ‘Public servants should act as a role model and stop wearing face masks first before the public to follow.'

The doctor added that the Thai people were made ‘to live like sick people for three years' which has long-term health damage.

He said: ‘It's been three years since the Thai people were made to live like sick people. Despite announcing that wearing masks is only now an option, the government still encouraged them to use the which was long-term health damage.

‘It's important to take care of yourself by getting enough oxygen in your lungs. That's what's good for the health.'

The public campaign is set to end on October 1, when the signatures would be submitted to the office of the minister of public health.

Thailand has recorded 4,671,309 Covid-19 cases as of September 15.

Ministers scrapped the mandatory requirement for people to wear masks outdoors and indoors - as well as other bizarre guidelines such as 'social distancing indoors with family'.

However, mask-wearing in the capital Bangkok has continued almost religiously, with the vast majority of Thai natives continuing to use the face coverings outdoors.
