Rebuilt Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' Class No. 35028 'Clan Line' is shown approaching Wimbledon from Raynes Park on the up main with the 'End of Southern Steam' from Weymouth, exactly 55 years after the final BR Southern Region steam-hauled services from London Waterloo, on 9th July 1967. Colour light signals had recently been introduced to this (otherwise little-changed) stretch by 1967, although the present signals are of a much more modern design. 'Clan Line' was used to haul the No. 2 Special on 2nd July 1967 (far too expensive for most enthusiasts!), and then put aside for preservation by the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society (MNLPS), its custodians ever since. The condition, and fine main line running record of the locomotive during preservation are second to none, and a great credit to the MNLPS. There had been significant delay of almost one hour owing to a track circuit failure earlier in the day, but the locomotive managed to make up time on the return journey on the up fast line to Waterloo, so there must have been some fine running beforehand at sustained high speed. When this film was captured, the train was only 15 minutes late, and the scene was very atmospheric as darkness descended on a balmy summer night. West Coast Railways' Class 47 No. 47 813 was attached to the rear of the ten-coach train. Shortly before the steam special arrived, two South Western Railway Class 455 units, the second of which may have been 455/7 No. 5710, passed under the footbridge, still in their colourful South West Trains livery (South Western Railways liveries are boring by comparison). As these units are likely to be replaced in the near future by the delayed Class 701 multiple units, it seemed fitting to include them disappearing into the colour-lit distance.
