It may be causing a bit of an internet firestorm, but this Black family in Brothers, Oregon was overjoyed and excited seeing that the star of Disney's new The Little Mermaid movie is Halle Bailey, one half of the Grammy-nominated R&B sister duo Chloe x Halle.

"She's Black?! Look mama she's Black!!" said the excited 13-year-old girl in this clip from September 10.

"I started crying at her response. I was sad that she didn’t feel seen until she saw that trailer of The Little Mermaid. But also happy that she has someone in the media that she feels connected to," said the proud mom who filmed this heartwarming moment that racked up nearly 800,000 likes.

The move to make Ariel a Black woman has not been as well received in other circles of the internet.

One Twitter user was recently suspended for celebrating an AI artist having “fixed” Bailey’s image to that of a white woman. “It’s over for wokecels”, he wrote triumphantly, just before the account was suspended. There have been countless racist memes circulating over the casting decision.
