Riots broke out and police used tear gas against students who on Friday night protested against the establishment of police presence on campus.

The footage filmed in Thessaloniki on September 17 shows students throwing projectiles against police who use tear gas in return.

The unrest erupted after a concert at the university and two people were arrested during the riots.

The protests were aimed at a decision by the Greek government to station police on university campuses. Academics and students fear the move will stifle freedom of expression while supporters say it's necessary.

Riots and tear gas during a student concert in Thessaloniki Greece, against the presence of police inside the universities, on Friday early morning 17/09. Groups of youths attending the concert threw objects toward riot police forces who were inside the campus, causing them to respond with chemicals resulting in the concert being drowned in clouds of tear gas. Thousands of concert attendees ran to the streets to escape the suffocating atmosphere, while traffic was blocked on the main roads of the city.

Soon after protesters gathered to demonstrate the concert dismantlement while burning barricades emerged in areas and streets around the campus of Thessaloniki. A rally began towards the campus with the significant participation of demonstrators. Heavy clashes broke out while police used a water cannon to disperse the mob and made excessive use of tear gas and stun grenades.

Footage shows protesters parkour over car rooftops to escape the clashes that continued all over the city center throughout the night. Two persons were arrested during the riots.
