Angry wild elephant attacks village to steal food as terrified villagers flee in Thailand
An angry wild elephant attacked a village to steal food as terrified villagers fled in Thailand.
The aggressive jumbo raided the compound next to Thaplan National Park in Prachin Buri province on September 18.
Shocked locals shouted at it, hoping to scare the creature away, but it chased the group instead as it was defiant to search the property for a meal.
Dramatic footage shows the animal approaching terrified villagers frantically escaping from the jumbo.
A park ranger said: ‘After an elephant killed one of our colleagues, the animals became fiercer and attacked villagers. They are afraid to go outside.'
The elephant was part of a herd that foraged around the park's conservation area but broke off from the group and entered the compound.
Residents pushed the jumbo away with the help of officials, but it fought back and successfully stole rice and other food supplies.
Another clip showed the elephant inside the kitchen pushing tables and chairs away as park rangers and locals watched it from a safe distance, hiding behind thick foliage.
Park officers and local leaders continuously patrol the area for more elephant sightings so they can guide the herd back inside the forest.
The park ranger added: ‘Some installed electric fences to keep the animals away, but these are temporary and dangerous solutions. The elephants could still pass through and leave damage inside.'
Authorities believed that elephants might have been stressed out after being chased away, so they became defensive. They called on the villagers to avoid the animals in case of a sighting and called the local rescuers instead to handle them.
Elephant attacks have seen an increase this month. In Chanthaburi province, a park ranger was killed during a rescue operation on a fruit plantation on September 14. In the same province, a monk also died while walking in on the creature in an empty parking lot.
