A brave wildebeest mum successfully defended her baby from three cheetahs by charging into them.

Stefan Kohrs was leading a tour through Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa, on January 9 when his son Jonathan spotted the predators watching a passing herd.

Dramatic footage shows the cheetah trio sprinting full speed towards the wildebeest, with one of the big cats tackling a 4-month-old youngster at the back of the pack.

Spotting her youngster in trouble, the mother wildebeest turned and charged at the aggressor, forcing it to release her child.

Despite the overwhelming numbers disadvantage, the mother used her horns to fend off the cheetahs allowing the calf to escape to the safety of the rest of the herd.

Kohrs, from Cape Town, said: “I loved the whole scene, it was great that the wildebeest won that time.

“The cheetahs had the calf on the ground three times, but its mother kept coming back over and over again to protect her young.

“The three cheetahs had been hunting wildebeest that day, with two of them focusing on the side of the herd while the other stalked from the back.

“I would say the calf was around four months old so was the obvious target for the predators as it was easier to bring down.

“The hunt went on for about two hours. There were two unsuccessful hunts and the cheetahs ended up lying down to get their breath back.

“I am the owner of Out of Africa Safaris and have been leading tours in the whole of southern Africa for over 28 years.”
