A kind driver rushed an injured turtle to a veterinarian after it was hit by a car, leaving its shell cracked open in Thailand.

Villager Suwat Kongsomthong found the severely injured creature next to a road in Samut Prakan province on September 18, with the animal's protective armor shattered like a watermelon allegedly from being struck by a speeding car.

The concerned local and his daughter approached the turtle to check on its condition and, seeing it still breathing, hurriedly called animal rescuers for help.

A volunteer administered first-aid on the reptile, whose bloody flesh was exposed under the caved-in fragments of its shell. It was identified as a snail-eating turtle that weighed about 10 kilograms.

Footage shows the specialist dousing the turtle's back with disinfectant before patching it up with gauze.

Due to the severity of its wounds it had to be rushed to an animal hospital in Pathum Thani province about an hour away.

Luckily, the compassionate vet reportedly offered to treat the turtle for free, adding that he would release it back to the wild once it has recovered.

Suwat said: 'I had work today, but I chose to rescue the turtle first. I found it on the side of the Wat Sri Waree Noi road.'
