Stunning, gaudy, nectar-feeding Red-collared Lorikeet sipping from Flame Tree flowers
Two adult Red-collared Lorikeets were feeding on orange-red Indian Flame Tree (Erythrina indica) flowers with noisy Rainbow Lorikeets. Perth’s large population of feral Rainbow Lorikeets was established in the late 1960s from aviary escapees, with a few birds living on the campus of the University of Western Australia. The population now numbers in the thousands, and the Lorikeets are largely restricted to the developed areas on the Swan Coastal Plain. Flocks of Rainbow Lorikeets sometimes include a few feral Red-collared Lorikeets.
