Epic fancy dress as Birmingham medical students take on Freshers Week in annual costume extravaganza!
It’s that time of year again, ‘The Hop’ is a no-theme fancy dress event held mid-Freshers Week.
The students, all studying medical degrees at the University of Birmingham, got dressed up and showed other students how to do a safe and fun event, without putting extra pressure on the NHS!
The group of over 1,500 academics graced Birmingham’s infamous Broad Street in England on Thursday (September 22) night and managed to keep themselves in check without a medical emergency in sight.
Over the years, the night has created an event-specific drink of legendary status, the name was christened the ‘Heidi’ and was originally made by a Birmingham medical student who now works as a GP in Stourbridge.
It is made of two shots of Archers, two of Smirnoff and one of Malibu, all in a pint glass and topped with orange or cranberry juice and lemonade.
Ironically, a new club has recently opened on the nightclub strip, called Heidi’s, which is where the fancy dress night took off this year before moving on to the PRYZM superclub.
Previous years' outfits on what has been dubbed as “The best annual fancy dress night in the UK” have included a play on the fuel worries of 2021 with a set of petrol pumps, a Colin the caterpillar who had an online copyright feud with other supermarkets and a North Korean ballistic missile.
This year did not disappoint either! On Thursday night, outfits included;
Pitbull, Percy Pigs, The Wall TV Program, A Sperm and Uterus, A group of Orca’s with the tagline ‘Free Orca’s From Sea World’, Cheesestrings, A possy of Borat’s, A group of road signs including the M69 Motorway, Inflatable Dancing Air Puppets, Pigeons, Three ‘Brum’ Cars, A group of 4 Top Gun pilot girls, Heinz Baked Beans, Hook a Duck, a group of Nessa’s from Gavin and Stacey, various Toy Story characters, Lemon fish and chips and many many more.
First year students are made to wear standard white logo’d T-Shirts, learning how much effort to put back into The Hop costumes in years-to-come.
