Hundreds of students in Madrid emptied their classrooms to join a strike in the name of addressing climate issues.

Footage from September 23 shows the students marching through the capital holding banners and signs, many with the slogan "capitalism kills the planet. We have to respond now."

El Sindicato de Estudiantes se ha manifestado este viernes 23 septiembre en una huelga de estudiantes para denunciar los efectos del cambio climático en el planeta. Desde la organización estudiantil han hecho un llamamiento al alumnado de todos los centros de estudios a vaciar las aulas para llenar las calles de diferentes localidades del Estado español.

Bajo el lema 'El capitalismo mata el planeta. Tenemos que responder ya', el Sindicato de Estudiantes quiere visibilizar los efectos del cambio climático "provocado por el capitalismo y el ansia de beneficios de la burguesía internacional". En su manifiesto, expone que este verano se han vivido olas de calor sin precedentes que "sólo en el Estado español han provocado 2.200 muertes". Además, aseguran que se está viviendo "la peor sequía en Europa en los últimos 500 años" y que los embalses "han llegado a mínimos históricos a causa de una agricultura intensiva que llena los bolsillos de los monopolios agroalimentarios".

Entre otras denuncias, el movimiento estudiantil apunta que "20 empresas de combustibles fósiles generan un tercio de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero a escala mundial" y que "100 multinacionales emiten el 80% del CO2". Es por eso que el sindicato asegura que "se ha llegado a un punto límite" y que "hay que convocar a toda la juventud a la huelga estudiantil climática global". La Coordinadora Estatal por la Defensa del Sistema Público de Pensiones ha dado apoyo a la huelga, apuntando que "la lucha por el planeta también es una lucha para mejorar las condiciones de vida".


Student strike in Madrid, Spain against climate change


The Student Union has demonstrated this Friday September 23 in a student strike to denounce the effects of climate change on the planet. Under the slogan 'Capitalism kills the planet. We have to respond now', the Student Union wants to make visible the effects of climate change "caused by capitalism and the desire for benefits of the international bourgeoisie." In his manifesto, he states that this summer there have been unprecedented heat waves that "only in the Spanish State have caused 2,200 deaths." In addition, they assure that "the worst drought in Europe in the last 500 years" is being experienced and that the reservoirs "have reached historic lows due to intensive agriculture that fills the pockets of agri-food monopolies."

Among other complaints, the student movement points out that "20 fossil fuel companies generate a third of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide" and that "100 multinationals emit 80% of CO2." That is why the union assures that "a limit point has been reached" and that "all youth must be called to the global climate student strike." The State Coordinator for the Defense of the Public Pension System has supported the strike, pointing out that "the fight for the planet is also a fight to improve living conditions."
