Protesters in London’s Trafalgar Square tried to burn a hijab and an Iranian flag at a rally on Saturday 24 September over the death of Mahsa Amini in Iranian police custody.

They struggled to light the flag in particular, which appeared to have been made of flame-retardant fabric, but made their point clear by also stomping on the Iranian flag.

Mahsa Amini died after being detained by Iran’s feared morality police, allegedly for not wearing her hijab correctly and for trousers that were too tight under her outer garments.

Photographs of her injured body she died after being beaten though Iranian authorities claim it was of natural causes.

Her death has sparked protests across Iran and the world.

The protesters in London had diverse backgrounds, united in opposition to the current theocratic government of Iran.

Some were Kurdish, like Mahsa Amini, others liberal, feminist, secular and even royalists, who held up pictures of the last Shah of Iran and chanted pro-Pahlavi Dynasty slogans. There was also a rainbow LGBTQ flag seen at the rally.
