This is the scene of devastation in which two people in one car died in a three-car-collision on the southbound carriageway of the M40 in the UK in the evening of Saturday 24 September.

Emergency services were called to the scene, near Hockley Heath in Warwickshire, at 8pm local time, where they found what was left of the vehicles spread over a large area.

Traffic was halted on both sides and the motorway was fully closed for over 13 hours whilst police dealt with the scene.

A blue Ford Fiesta was covered in tarpaulin. Its two occupants, a man and a woman in their 60’s, died.

The mangled wreck appeared to show the vehicle had been heavily impacted to the side.

Officers arrested a 20-year-old man from Berkshire on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A further two vehicles were also involved: a silver Mercedes and a blue Dodge Nitro, whose owner walked away from the accident and helped officers with their enquiries.

Warwickshire Police released the following statement: "A man and a woman have died and a man has been arrested after a collision on the M40 on Saturday evening (24 September).

"Police and emergency services were called shortly before 8pm to reports of a collision on the southbound side of carriageway between junctions 15 (Warwick) and 16 (Henley).

"It involved three vehicles – a silver Mercedes, a blue Dodge Nitro and a blue Ford Fiesta.

"Sadly the driver of the Ford and a passenger travelling in the same vehicle – a man and a woman both in their 60s – were pronounced deceased at the scene.

"Their next of kin has been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

"Shortly afterwards, officers arrested a 20-year-old man from Berkshire on suspicion of driving with excess drugs.

"He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody at this time.

"Road closures were in place while emergency services were in attendance, however both sides of the carriageway have now fully reopened.

"Investigating officers would like anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicles, and the manner in which they were being driven to come forward.

"They’re also keen to speak to anyone who has dashcam footage of the collision.

"Anyone with information should contact the force quoting incident 323 of 24 September."
