A German tourist was attacked by furious locals after he allegedly stole a resident's van in Indonesia.

The holidaymaker Claus Riese, 56, was filmed weaving through traffic while in the carjacked vehicle as a mob of motorcycle-riding villagers pursued him in the Buleleng Regency of Bali on Friday, September 23.

He was cornered after crashing the allegedly stolen Daihatsu Luxio minivan into the rest area of a gas station as a man tried to drag him out of the driver's seat. However, the foreigner managed to flee into a cosmetics shop nearby, prompting terrified employees to file out of the store.

Another clip shows an apparently beaten-up Claus lying bloodied on the floor while police arrived to take him into custody.

Officers said Claus was visiting a friend in Denpasar, and was being chauffeured by the van owner Ikhwanul, 35, to the meetup.

While refueling at a gas station, Claus asked to drive the van himself, and allegedly struck Ikhwanul in the face when he refused before making off with the vehicle.

Adjunct Commissioner Gede Sumarjaya, Buleleng Police public relations head, said: 'The man is suspected of snatching a car and driving recklessly on the road. He was chased by residents and caught in a shop.'

Buleleng Police crime unit chief Hadimastika said Claus is currently detained for questioning. He is facing robbery charges and may be imprisoned for up to nine years according to Indonesian law.
