70,000 face masks shaped like human lungs to warn about air pollution in Thailand
A huge statue of masks shaped like human lungs was built to warn about air pollution in Thailand.
The structure entitled ‘Life & Breath Monument' was unveiled by a private construction company SCG inside their building in Bangkok.
Footage shows thousands of white surgical masks glued together to make up the massive organ. A total of 70,000 masks were used to represent each Covid-19 death in the country due to the pandemic.
SCG, or Siam Cement Public Company Limited, said they took the opportunity to raise public awareness on air quality which should not be taken for granted.
Its head of services Wachirachai Koonamwattana said: ‘Even before the Covid-19, clean air was something we couldn't see, so people ignored it, but there were issues with germs or even PM 2.5 dusts.
'Thus, the importance of clean air is something the public should be aware of and find a way to solve it.'
The emergence of Covid-19 has made human lungs more fragile, so the concerned private entity believed that paying more attention to clean air can help to prevent people from spreading diseases.
Before the pandemic, Bangkok already faced PM2.5 pollution, which are small particles that can enter human lungs and blood vessels, posing a significant risk to cardiovascular and respiratory systems, which still posed a threat to post-Covid health.
