This is the reckless moment a 'subway surfer' pulled a dangerous stunt - hanging between the cars of a moving train in New York.

The daredevil wearing a face mask, glasses, and a blue hoodie, was recorded standing in between the gaps of the train cars at 3:45 pm local time on September 26.

Upon seeing the camera filming him, he flashed a cheeky hand sign as the train accelerated from Roosevelt Ave & 82nd Street towards downtown Manhattan.

Shocked onlooker Hernan Reynoso, a musician in the city who captured the incident while he was travelling to work, said: This is a danger challenge where people surf between the two subway carriages while they move.

'Many young people have been hit in the head by the metal bars before the train goes inside the subway tunnel. Many kids almost lost their lives.

'Those two subway carriages can cut your legs off. You're not supposed to do those things. They're illegal.'

A spokesman for the New York City Subway said the incident has been reported to train supervision.

'Subway surfing' - which involves riding outside moving trains - is reportedly becoming a rising trend among daredevil youths, who post clips of the alarming stunts online.

New York's Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) said there have been 627 reports of subway surfing between January and July 2022 - a steep spike compared to last year's 96 incidents covering the same period.

The lethal craze has reportedly resulted in teenagers losing limbs and even parts of their skull after the stunts go wrong.
