A brave squirrel chased off a yellow cobra managing to avoid two deadly strikes in the process.

Jannette Kotze, 53, was on a drive through Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa, when she spotted the two animals’ standoff across the sandy savannah.

Incredible footage shows the ground squirrel nip at its highly venomous rival’s tail a couple of times to apparently move it on from its patch.

Clearly annoyed by its presence, the snake flared its neck and with fangs bared, lunged not once but twice at the rodent, who used its impressive agility to avoid the attacks.

Jannette, from Pretoria, South Africa, said: “I could not believe our luck. It was only me and my husband who saw this amazing encounter.

“The Kgalagadi is very open and sandy, so it was easy to spot the action as we drove slowly through.

“Squirrels see snakes as a danger to themselves and their young so that is why it was chasing the cobra.

“I’ve never seen anything like it before. The pair of them continued their standoff for around two minutes.

“Eventually the snake just went over the dunes and escaped to safety. I was just in total amazement at the squirrel’s bravery.”
