A pet dog was rescued after it slipped from a student's arms as they crossed an overflowing river together.

The young girl was left stranded with her pet and classmates after heavy rains submerged a bridge on the way home in Palawan province, the Philippines on September 26.

They waited for an hour until the water slightly receded to cross together. However, she was almost swept away so she tossed the dog further hoping it would reach the banks.

Footage shows the youngster braving the swollen body of water with the pooch before she lost balance and parted with the dog. The pet was reportedly caught in a fallen tree branch along the river later and reunited with the girl.

Volunteer teacher Melinda Ongcal said: ‘The children really wanted to go home. When I arrived there some of them already crossed the water. I tried to stop them because it was dangerous. We really need proper roads here.'

The girl successfully reached the other end of the river but the dog was washed away with the currents.

Fortunately, the dog caught on a fallen tree branch along the river where the local officials found him.

The girl and the dog were reunited in the village where there was a relief operation done by local officials afterwards due to the typhoon.

When the incident happened, the country was ravaged by typhoon Noru that left nine dead and was the most powerful typhoon that hit the country this year. Noru is moving towards Vietnam and is expected to make landfall in Hanoi on September 28.
