An American tourist was attacked and robbed in a red light district in Thailand.

Rakkan Gassim Algassim, 35, was with his friend, Russian woman Alena Mukhieva, 24, when he was allegedly mugged on Bangla Road in Phuket in the early hours of Wednesday morning, September 28.

Police said the foreign man, an engineer from Pennsylvania, had multiple injuries on his face and left middle finger. They said he also appeared to be 'intoxicated and angry'.

Alena told the embassy that a group of strong men dressed like officials attacked Rakkan and stole 8,000 THB in cash, around 210 USD, from him in Soi Bangla.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Kittisak Sommat said officers are now investigating the suspected mugging.

The policeman added: ‘We found the man in a drunken state. He was also angry and refused to be treated by paramedics at the hospital.'

‘From investigations, we found that the man and his female companion stayed in room 5304 in Diamond Cliff hotel. It is unclear what was the reason behind the attack and who the men were, as the injured foreign man has not been cooperative.'

‘Officers have already been sent to the scene to investigate further.'
