Typhoon Noru caused heavy flooding in northeastern Thailand today after arriving from neighbouring Vietnam.

The tropical storm tore down a 10-metre embankment in Khon Kaen province, causing water to overflow and submerge rice fields.

Authorities rushed to patch up the structure with wood and sandbags, but the makeshift barricade was not enough to stem the surging flood.

Khon Kaen mayor Arkhom Silpadornbama said: 'Water had flooded the road that people use to transport agricultural products. That road leads to the city center, thus, urgent fixing is critical otherwise the flooding will worsen.

'We have also requested additional equipment and personnel from a nearby military base.'

Noru made landfall in Vietnam on Wednesday and has weakened to a tropical depression as it moved across Thailand on Thursday, September 29.

However, authorities have warned of possible floods and landslides across 64 provinces in the country as the weather system sweeps inland towards Myanmar.
