Two Ukrainian soldiers on Saturday raised a Ukrainian flag at the road leading into the city of Lyman which is held by Russian troops but encircled by Ukrainian forces.

The video shows the soldiers pinning a flag to a sign saying "Lyman" at a road leading into the city.

Thousands of Russian troops are encircled in the strategically important town in the Donbas region.

“The Russian grouping in the Liman area is surrounded. The settlements of Yampol, Novoselivka, Shandrigolovo, Drobyshevo, Stavki have been liberated,” said Serhiy Cherevaty, spokesman for the Vostok group of Ukrainian troops. According to him, about 5,000 enemy soldiers who are trying to break through could get into the encirclement. The head of the Lugansk OVA, Sergei Gaidai, said that the Russian military, encircled in Liman, is left with one of three options: either try to break through, or surrender, or "everyone around there will die." According to him, the Russian units in Liman asked their command for permission to leave the city, but were refused.
