At least 174 dead in football match riot in Indonesia
At least 147 fans were killed and more than 100 injured in riots at a football match in Indonesia on Saturday night.
The trouble erupted at the game between home team Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at the Kanjuruhan Stadium, in Malang Regency, East Java Province.
Vsiting team Persebaya won with a score of 3-2 but the disturbance happened shortly after the referee blew the whistle to mark the end of the match. Thousands of people ran onto the field chasing the players.
Inspector General Nico Afinta, East Java Police Chief said: 'The supporters were chasing Arema players, and we were trying to keep them out. We were trying to prevent them from entering the field.'
Police fired tear gas at supporters trying to enter the field.
The firing of tear gas sparked riots. Thousands of fans then crammed into each other at the exit of the stadium.
The police chief added: 'Prevention efforts were carried out until tear gas was applied, because they had damaged the police car and finally tear gas was sprayed.'
Thousands of Arema supporters, who were still in the stands panicked and rushed for the exit. They scrambled towards doors 10 and 12 where there was a buildup of fans and dozens were crushed.
Indonesian authorities said on Sunday that at least 174 people, including two police officers, died and more than 100 more were injured.
The PSSI (Indonesian Football Association) said it had launched an investigation into the tragedy. The Indonesian Premier League was suspended for one week.
