President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) spoke about the riots that occurred at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang after the Arema FC match against Persebaya on Saturday (1/10/2022) yesterday. Jokowi expressed his condolences and hoped that this incident would not happen again.
"I express my deep condolences for the deaths of 129 of our brothers and sisters in the football tragedy in Kanjuruhan, Malang, East Java," Jokowi said on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube, Sunday (2/10).

Jokowi also asked Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin and East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa to monitor the condition of the victim. Jokowi also gave special directions to the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo regarding the Kanjuruhan tragedy.

The following is Jokowi's full statement regarding the Kanjuruhan Malang tragedy:

I express my deep condolences for the deaths of 129 of our brothers and sisters in the football tragedy in Kanjuruhan, Malang, East Java. I have asked the Minister of Health and the Governor of East Java to specifically monitor medical services for victims who are being treated in hospitals in order to get the best service.

And has also ordered the Menpora, the National Police Chief, and the PSSI Headmaster to conduct a thorough evaluation of the implementation of the football match and also the security procedures for this organization.

Specifically to the National Police Chief, I ask to investigate and thoroughly investigate this case. For this reason, I also ordered PSSI to temporarily suspend Liga 1 until evaluation and improvement of security procedures were carried out.

I regret this tragedy and I hope this is the last tragedy of football in the country. Don't let another human tragedy like this happen in the future. We must continue to maintain sportsmanship, humanity and a sense of brotherhood of the Indonesian nation.
