Tourists enjoying cannabis on Khao San Road in Thailand admitted they were confused about the laws surrounding the drug.

Footage shows four holidaymakers being asked what they think about marijuana decriminalization and whether they understand the rules.

Ministers in Bangkok decriminalized cannabis in June this year leading to thousands of street stalls and shops opening around the country selling the plants. Locals are also allowed to grow cannabis at home to use and sell but smoking recreationally in public is technically illegal - despite many people doing so at bars and cafes.

The first tourist seen speaking in the video said: 'Cannabis legalization in Thailand is a great thing. To bring it from the underground and deal with criminality. It can reduce alcohol consumption, strengthen farmers and breeders.

'Hopefully in a few years we won't have to import cannabis from outside but we will have the same quality American soldiers had in the 1970s. It will not happen overnight. There are laws and skills and talents to bring into Thailand.'

About the rules, he said the switching back and forth is merely a work in progress.

He added: 'Once the money and the taxation are in place, at the end of the year the numbers talk. It's a win-win so it would be okay. The laws will change.'

The second holiday maker said: 'I think economically it's a very good decision because it gives all of the farmers outside Bangkok cash crops to sell.

'When farmers make money all the food prices go down. When food prices go down, petrol goes down and everything is affected, so, when a lot of other countries had suffered a lot in the last few months, cannabis had really buffered Thailand's economy.

'In other borders like Malaysia and Singapore, it's only legal to smoke weed. Whereas travelers from the west specifically from Europe, America and Africa where it has been medically accessible for decades. Thailand is the only place in Asia where you can smoke weed. You can't in Korea, Japan, China or anywhere else.

'So what this has done in the past few months when countries are starting to open borders, Thailand has already recovered much faster than anywhere else. Not only in the tourism and hospitality industry but also because giving income to farmers and normal people, the small and medium enterprises had grown as well. When weed business owners earn income they would also buy food and drinks.

'Overall, I think it's a very progressive step that Thailand has made.'

He admitted that the rules were confusing but it has become easier over time.

'In the beginning I was confused because it does change very quickly. It ran from decriminalized to legalized medically to legalized to can't smoke joints to can smoke joints, so, there were a lot of times I didn't understand.'

'But now it had been a few months and Thailand had made changes in the policies and status quo. Now I understand where I can and can't smoke. Where I can and can't buy. What is legal, what is not and who has permission.'

'I think now is a lot clearer.'

The third tourist in the video said: 'Personally I like it. I smoke so I'm glad not to be afraid of going to jail. I'm from Canada so we don't go to jail there either.

'I don't know the laws that well. Basically I realize don't smoke in public, be discreet, you can carry it around in your pockets and that's all I need to know. If I'm careful and quiet and not causing any problems then it's good.'

The fourth tourist said: 'Yeah I think it's great. Everyone likes to smoke so it was good to have.'

'I haven't really looked into it. I had a quick google search and it seems like you can't smoke out in public. You can smoke at home, buy it out here. I am not sure if there's a limit you can have but it seems pretty straight forward.'
