A stray puppy was rescued by kind residents after it fell into a filthy drain in the Philippines.

The unfortunate pooch waded through sewage as it peeked out of a storm drain to cry for help in Davao City on August 22.

Driver Angel Dacillo was passing by the area on her motorcycle and hopped down from her vehicle after hearing the animal's desperate pleas.

She found it stuck under the concrete pavement, having fallen into the dirty water while wandering on the roadside.

Fearing for the dog's safety, Angel asked for help from the locals to pull it out.

Footage shows how the villagers tied a string to the whimpering canine's right paw and hoisted it up to onto the sidewalk.

The hapless puppy trembled while Angel held it, its fur exposed to the chilly air.

Angel said: 'We couldn't tie the string around its neck, so we used its paw instead.

'It was very lucky that I had an errand that day. I was just going out to buy food when I heard the puppy crying.'

The Good Samaritan has since adopted the pooch, which she has named Camille.

She said: 'Camille is quite happy now. She has a mischievous streak.'
