October 4 2022 QUEENS, New York - The Diocese of Brooklyn today celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, with the special Blessing of the Animals by members of the clergy throughout the day outside churches in Brooklyn and Queens.

Blessings were performed by Reverend Joseph G. Fonti of Saint Mel Roman Catholic Church in Flushing, Queens at 4pm on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

Animals like dogs, cats, hamster, birds and iguana were blessed.

Saint Francis, who lived in the 12th century, is the Catholic Church’s patron saint of animals and the environment. Pet owners were invited to bring their animals for a special blessing, asking God to grant them good health and to keep them from harm.
