Locals braced themselves for floods as heavy rain continued battering northern Thailand this week.

Chiang Mai residents prepared for the deluge by placing sandbags around their homes to stem the flow of water on October 4.

Footage shows soldiers helping the villagers fill empty sacks with sand to use as flood barriers protec.

Local media reported that the Ping River level in the city had risen to 4.65 metres from the risk threshold of 3.70 metres, with the water spilling into low-lying communities and causing floods reaching .

Atsani Buranapakon, mayor of Chiang Mai municipality, said: 'The flood keeps rising and flowing into other areas including schools, temples, communities and markets.

'Authorities are rushing to close down culverts on boths sides of the Ping River.'

Heavy rain has been battering large parts of Thailand for the last three months. The torrential weather was compounded by Typhoon Noru, which brought severe deluges to the northeast region causing floods and overflowing rivers.

Typhoon Noru made landfall in Vietnam last Wednesday and weakened to a tropical depression as it moved into Thailand on Thursday, September 29.

One person in Thailand's Sisaket province died when powerful winds knocked a tree onto a pickup truck, injuring two others inside. While in the Philippines, where Noru first struck, at least 10 people were killed and an estimated 50,000 displaced by the severe weather.
