Dramatic moment rescuers save villager clinging to tree branch during severe flood in Thailand
This is the dramatic moment rescuers saved a villager clinging to a tree branch during severe floods in Thailand.
Volunteers were searching submerged parts of Lopburi province when they spotted the woman, Sophin Promthong, who had been swept away but miraculously survived the torrents on October 3.
She was floating in neck-deep floods clinging onto a thin tree branch when she was found by the rescue team .
The workers threw a lifeline to the stranded lady and pulled her to safety onto their boat.
Sophin said: 'I was walking through the flood along a road when the current suddenly swept me away. I managed to swim and grab onto the tree. Luckily, the rescuers came and saved me.'
Heavy rain has been battering large parts of Thailand for the last three months. The torrential weather has been compounded by Typhoon Noru, which brought severe deluges to the northeast region causing floods and overflowing rivers.
Officials in Bangkok are even warning people to work from home due to the run-off from the typhoon causing river levels to rise dangerously high.
Typhoon Noru made landfall in Vietnam last Wednesday and weakened to a tropical depression as it moved into Thailand on Thursday, September 29.
One person in Thailand's Sisaket province died when powerful winds knocked a tree onto a pickup truck, injuring two others inside. While in the Philippines, where Noru first struck, at least 10 people were killed and an estimated 50,000 displaced by the severe weather.
