Thai restaurant mixes live goldfish with baskets of floating vegetables and noodles
A Thai restaurant mixes live gold fish with baskets of floating vegetables and noodles.
The street-side cafe called Auntie Porn Rice Noodles lets the creatures swim through a moat around the custom table in Nonthaburi, Thailand.
Footage shows the goldfish swimming among the baskets of vegetables moving along the stream of water pushed by pumps.
Restaurant owner and cook 'Aunty Porn' said she took the idea from Japanese conveyor belt restaurants - but added fish to keep children entertained.
She said: ‘I used to have vegetables in baskets and customers would queue and bump into each other, so I was was thinking about how to avoid having them block the walkway.
'I had the idea of a water conveyor belt after visiting a shabu-shabu conveyor belt eatery.'
‘When we had families coming, the children would become irritated and wander around making it impossible for parents to eat. So I placed the goldfish in the water to keep the children entertained, they stay sitting down while they watch them.'
Customers can order their vegetables which are served floating in the water. Aside from locally grown vegetables, a selection of homemade broth and seafood is available.
However, the auntie added that she sometimes receive criticism from the non-adventurous eaters who are concerned about hygiene and animal welfare.
She said: ‘I have received compliments for the idea but there has been some criticisms too. They said I was being cruel to animals. I feed them properly and I believe I was being fair to them.'
