A supermarket shopper has shared a savvy trick that saves him 50% at the checkout.
As food prices skyrocket, many people are being forced to cut costs where they can and look for ways to save on the weekly or monthly food shop.
One TikToker, Martin Harris from Hailsham, East Sussex, has taken to the social media site to share a nifty trick of his own. His video has gone viral with over 6.6 million views.
It all came about with an onion experiment, of all things.
After years of buying pre-packed fruit and veg, Martin decided to compare the price of loose and pre-packed brown onions during a random visit to Asda with his girlfriend.
The onions, which came in a pack of three would have cost Martin the 79p that he was used to spending, however, after weighing them on the supermarket scales, he was left stunned.
Martin discovered that the same weight of onions bought loose would cost just 39p – meaning that he had been paying double the price every time.
The super saver also found the hack useful in Tesco, where he saved 15p on a packet of four lemons and five bananas, which were 12p cheaper when bought loose.
“It’s always worth checking,” Martin said. “It seems that if the loose item is sold per kg, it is normally cheaper than pre-packed. If it’s sold per item, it can be the same or sometimes more".
Martin believes the pricing scale is due to packaging and feels it is "unnecessary" to put the fruit and veg in plastic.
He added: “I understand that there are costs to the packaging. Although it’s unnecessary and not eco-friendly. It annoys me that on the shelf label, pre-packed is priced each, and loose is per kg. This seems deliberate so it’s not easy to compare the two prices.
Martin also noticed that the prices in the supermarket have increased by about 10% on many items.
Social media users have been left shocked by Martin's savvy money hack and have rushed to the comment section to share their thoughts.
“Just shows you..your paying more for the package, than the product!!!!!,” wrote one user.
“Makes no sense, that is some expensive packaging,” said someone else.
A third person wrote: “I never do anymore, fruit is cheaper too.”
"Does this work with gas and electric?" joked another user.
“Those pre-packs are better quality tbh, but I agree, take the loose onions," added someone else, to which Martin responded: “I’ve been finding the loose ones just as good quality.”

"But in this store, they were right next to the scales, so I weighed them to see the difference."

“There doesn’t seem to be as many offers as there were a few months ago."
In a video that has been viewed a staggering 6.6million times, Martin can be seen opting for his usual 3-pack of onions as he reveals the price he normally pays - 79p.
The price tag also states that the onions cost 26.4p individually however when Martin comes up with the bright idea to weigh the vegetables, he was stunned to see how much money he had been spending.
Martin found that the weight of three onions would cost him 39p highlighting just how much buying loose vegetables can save you.
