A 6-foot-long shark barged into a fisherman before stealing his catch from the end of his spear.

Chad Sinden was leading a dive off the island of Eleuthera, Bahamas, searching for invasive lionfish when the British ex-pat caught one with his spear.

Frenzied footage from Chad’s point of view shows a Caribbean reef shark appear from nowhere and start to snap its teeth at the spiky catch.

In the chaos, the shark missed its target twice, meaning its jaws came right up to Chad’s face, before it finally grabbed the lionfish and swam away.

Chad said: “Sharks are so fast it is easy to get confused and frightened. I imagine this could have been a bit scary for an inexperienced diver.

“But I knew the shark was not interested in me. The shark is just doing what nature intended, eating all the injured, sick and dying fish to keep the ocean healthy.

“I am used to sharks being this close as I dive with them every day. I knew to stay relaxed and calm in this moment.

“The shark was not interested in me but the tasty lionfish on the end. It was also getting confused by my action camera on the other end of the spear which resembles another fish.

“My working days are spent underwater with these beautiful and misunderstood creatures.

“Sharks are not the mindless killing machines that people think and they need our protection as they are essential to our ecosystem.

“Here in the Bahamas the lionfish are an invasive species. They are killing entire ecosystems and need to be removed.

“You can eat cook and eat them once the spines are removed but sometimes the sharks get in there first.”
