An ex-hunter turned vegan saved a baby deer twice after it was stuck in a wire fence only for the animal to wedge itself between a gate and wall.

Joshua Crane, 37, was cycling around the outskirts of Napa, California, US, on June 14 when he heard screams coming from nearby.

Frenzied footage shows a fawn had become trapped behind a rock wall before panicking and getting its head stuck between wires when Joshua appeared to help.

Having swiftly removed the deer from the wires, the frantic fawn managed to get bunged between the fence’s gatepost and the wall requiring Joshua to lift it free for a second time.

Crane said: “It felt great being able to save the deer. I was just a little out of breath afterwards.

“Being vegan and an ex-hunter, I've turned from killing to being compassionate and helping animals when I can.

“I was mountain biking in a rural vineyard area when I heard screams coming from behind a wall.

“I’d say the deer was around four months old as they lose their spots after that age. There was no mom in sight.

“Judging by how much energy it had, the fawn couldn't have been there more than an hour.

“It had probably got stuck after running from a car, jumped and wedged itself between a wire fence and rock wall at the edge of a vineyard.

“It took about five minutes to get it free altogether, especially after I had to pull him out of a tight wedged spot between gate post and rock the second time.

“It didn’t appear to be hurt, just a bit freaked out, but it did run away.

“I used to be an avid hunter and spear fisherman but turned vegan five years ago.

“Compassion for animals comes quick when you’re no longer looking at them as food, instead as sentient beings.”
