Hundreds of women, including teenagers, who were believed to be possessed by evil spirits, took part in a mass whipping ritual at the annual Hindu festival of Vijayadasami in the Indian village of Bavithram Vellalapatti.

Around 3,000 women "seeking salvation" queued up for hours before kneeling on a lashing ground and having their backs and hands whipped by the priest, as family members and locals watched.

The ritual happens at Sri Achappan Temple at Bavithram Vellalapatti, a remote village situated on the border of Tiruchi and Namakkal districts on Vijayadasami Day.

According to tradition, women who don't feel the pain at first lash are those who need to be freed from evil. The flogging ritual is also meant to cure women of their illnesses and bring good luck to their families.
