Heartbroken families collapsed in tears today as they laid flowers at the scene of the nursery massacre in Thailand.

A memorial service was held for the victims of the knife and gun massacre at the the childcare centre in Nong Bua Lamphu province this afternoon, October 7.

Relatives and local officials in white suits laid white roses at the entrance to the single-storey building in the Uthai Sawan district, where drug-addled former policeman Panya Khamrab, 34, started his murderous rampage on Thursday afternoon.

He killed at least 36 people - including 24 young children aged between two and four - and injured 12 others before turning the gun on himself.

Suthit Chanhawan, Deputy Governor and Acting Governor of Nong Bua Lamphu Province, delivered a wreath from and a bouquet from the country's royal family.

The King and Queen are expected to visit the area this evening at around 8pm local time.
