A rescue team saved a hapless pet dog after its hind paw was pierced by an iron rebar in Thailand.

The volunteers rushed to the site in Trat province to free the injured pooch named Soda on October 4.

Video shows the specialists wrapping the dog's muzzle in bandages to keep it from biting them before snapping off the rod with metal cutters.

They then pulled out the rebar's hook end from Soda's hind paw as it whimpered in pain.

One of the rescuers said: 'We had to choose whether to carry the dog then pull out the hook, or to cut the rod with the metal cutter.

'We were afraid it would move around and fall if we carried it, so we went for the second option.'

Soda's owner Sathit Sukagul, 47, said: 'I was out at work when my wife called to tell me Soda was injured and needed rescue.'

He added that the canine liked to wander around the neighbourhood and likely injured itself while playing outside.

Sathit said: 'This happened because the authorities are repairing the roads and have put iron rebars on the roadside.'
