A kind Thai local feeds his fish by lowering bunches of bananas into their pond.

Instead of using store-bought pellets, villager Pichai Nguen-Charoenpol, 64, feeds the aquatic animals ripe fruit at his farm in Ratchaburi province, Thailand.

Footage shows the resourceful farmer tying bunches of yellow 'Pisang Awak' bananas on strings, dangling them from a footbridge for the fish to eat on October 5.

The creatures - including red tilapias, giant gouramis, hampala barbs, and striped catfish - approach occasionally to 'graze' on the treats.

Pichai said the idea came to him after he accidentally dropped a ripe banana into the water and saw the fish scramble to devour it - including its peel.

He said: 'I tried dropping in the whole bunch to see whether the fish would enjoy it, and they did.

'After doing this for years, my fish grew much larger. The water is also much cleaner now unlike when I used pellets. Back then, the fish barely grew and almost all of them died.

'I'm not sure if they can be fed other types of bananas because I've never tried.'
