Indonesia stampede: Pray held for victims of soccer stampede in Kanjuruhan Stadium, 3 police are suspects
Thousands of supporters held a prayer together for the hundreds of victims who died in the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy at Malang, East Java (Indonesia).
Footage filmed outside the VIP stands of the H. Agus Salim stadium, Padang City, October 6, shows member of the Indonesian People's Representative Council (DPR RI) Andre Rosiade leading a prayer together.
As the people's representative in parliament, Rosiade urged the government to thoroughly investigate the tragedy, make it public transparently, and punish anyone guilty of firing tear gas which is forbidden to be brought into the stadium.
Rosiade asked the government to ensure that Indonesia would not be sanctioned by FIFA, because it would stop the Indonesian football competition.
Meanwhile, at the same time, the Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri) General Listyo Sigit Prabowo announced 6 suspects in the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy.
3 of the 6 suspects are police officers. Two police officers were the ones who ordered the firing of tear gas inside the stadium.
"Another is a police officer who is aware of the FIFA rules regarding the prohibition of tear gas, but he did not prevent or prohibit the use of tear gas," the National Police Chief Prabowo added.
In addition, the other 3 suspects are the committee, the league director, and Arema FC security officers.
The Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy occurred on Saturday (1 October 2022), after the match between Arema FC vs Persebaya Surabaya. 131 people died in the incident.
