Today's collapse of the bridge linking the occupied Crimean peninsula with Russia has caused heavy traffic.

Footage filmed on the same day of the incident (October 8), shows a long line of cars queuing to enter the city of Kerch, east of Crimea.

The cause of the explosion is unknown. Russian authorities have launched a criminal investigation and President Putin has ordered a government inquiry.

The incident represents a further challenge for Russia at its worst time when Ukrainian forces have made gains in territories occupied by Russia. The bridge was a key supply route for the country and was used frequently to move military equipment.

The collapse of the structure is a great blow to Russia's reputation. The bridge was opened by Vladimir Putin in 2018, four years after Crimea was illegally annexed.
