A barge sank after colliding with a 17,000 tonne cargo ship off the coast of Thailand on Tuesday.

The Maha Nakhon 2 - one of four barges ferrying coiled metal sheets along Samut Prakan waters - crashed into the vessel from Bangladesh called VASI STAR on October 11.

Poor visibility and stormy weather had caused the Liberian-registered VASI STAR to crash into the barge, authorities said.

Chatchai Vejsan, Samut Prakan Marine Department Director, said: 'The vessel that sank is known as the Maha Nakhon 2, and it arrived carrying metal alongside four other ships. It was the only one that was hit.'

He added that no injuries or deaths were reported and that the barge will later be towed out of the water.

Both the barge owner and ship owner will be investigated, he said.

Samut Prakan's Regional Harbor Office has advised sailors to avoid travelling near the crash site, urging them to be cautious of the weather condition when setting sail.
