This is the heartwarming moment a dog stranded on a roof during severe flooding was rescued in Thailand.

The black and white pooch was reportedly separated from his owners when residents rushed to evacuate the submerged village in Udon Ratchathani province on October 5.

He swam across a 15ft-deep deluge to find safe ground and took shelter on the metal roof of a house for at least six hours before rescue volunteers found him.

Footage shows the patrolling boat approaching the scared dog barking for help.

Rescue team member Ampon Liamthong said: ‘When the rain stopped, our group returned to the village to ensure everyone was safely evacuated. We were relieved that the dog survived and waited patiently until we found him. He was a smart pooch.'

Ampon added they calmed the weary dog first with some meal before they took it onboard the rescue vessel.

He said: ‘He looked agitated and afraid. We gave it some food before we took it onboard.'

When the dog was fed and friendly towards the team, they gave it a space on the boat and joined them.

The dog was taken to the evacuation shelter, where it would temporarily stay until animal shelters could adopt the dog. It was given a health check and found unhurt despite staying alone in the storm-battered village for long hours.

Relieved rescue officer Ampon said: ‘During flood like this, sometimes the pets are often forgotten. When the water receded, there were so many dead animals around. We want to avoid that, so we do our best to save everyone.'

More than 72,000 families were affected in 30 provinces by severe flooding that killed four people.
