An injured baby elephant separated from its mother was rescued in Thailand.

The one-week-old wild jumbo with a deep gash on its foot and wounds all over its body was found alone by park rangers in Khao Soi Dao Wildlife Sanctuary in Chanthaburi province on October 9.

Officers waited for two hours until 6:30 am but no elephant herd claimed the crying juvenile, so they took it to one of their outposts to apply first aid.

Footage shows officers cleaning the creature's wounds with a bag of disinfectant. Another clip showed vets drawing blood from the animal to check for diseases.

Wildlife sanctuary head Eakchai Sandee said: ‘The elephant blood test was sent to Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province.

'Until the elephant is in a healthier condition and can consume normal food, the conservation team will find a way to bring the elephant back to its family.'

Eakchai added that they are looking for the baby jumbo's mum and investigating how it was wounded.

However, he said that it might have been shunned by the herd on purpose because it was sick with a contagious disease.

He said: ‘It could also be the reason why the herd left it behind.'

The officers prepared a clean enclosure for the baby jumbo lined with hay where it would stay until it was in better condition. A team of vets were also monitoring its health.

The sanctuary chief added: ‘Until the elephant is in a healthier condition and can consume normal food, the conservation team will find a way to bring the elephant back to its family.'

In the meantime, the creature was fed goat milk which it had been taking.

The result of the blood and health test is expected to come out next week, but wildlife sanctuary officers said the baby elephant started showing signs of improvement after its wounds were cleaned.
