Monster waves wash away dance floor, bar, and tables at wedding reception in Hawaii
Monster waves washed away a dance floor, mini bar, and tables at a wedding reception after crashing over a seawall.
Sara Ackerman was at her friends Riley Carson and Dillon Murphy’s wedding on July 16 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, US, when the sea their ceremony was next to started to rage.
Dramatic footage shows the high tides initially smashing against the fencing until one wave towers over the barrier and sent water flying across the ground.
Author Sara’s video shows tables and chairs set up for the reception get washed away as well as the couple’s mini bar, where two servers just barely escaped being swept away too.
Sara said: “I saw the waves coming and knew it was going to be huge, so I started filming.
“I grew up in Hawaii and lived on the North Shore, and these waves looked more like north shore waves than south shore waves.
“They were breaking way outside and barrelling. I expected a big splash, but not for the water to flood in like that.
“We backed up onto the steps of the venue. Never turn your back on the ocean is drilled into us from a young age, and we were all definitely watching it closely.
“The waves blasted over the seawall and took out a mini bar that had been set up, reception tables, chairs, and the dance floor. No one was hurt thankfully.
“The two girls manning the bar saw everyone’s faces when they wave was coming and ran, otherwise they might have been taken out.
“The bride asked for the ceremony to go on, and we moved the tables after the ceremony, which was gorgeous, especially with the big surf breaking behind it.
“I love to surf, so seeing the ocean like this was a real treat.”
