The Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO) test-fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) from INS Arihant.

The incident happened in the target area in the Bay of Bengal on October 14.

Visuals showed the missile was launched to a predetermined range and impacted the target area in the Bay of Bengal with very high accuracy.

All operational and technological parameters of the weapon system have been validated, the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The successful launch of the SLBM by INS Arihant is significant to prove crew competency and validate the SSBN (Ship, Submersible, Ballistic, Nuclear) program which is a critical component of India's nuclear deterrence capability, said the ministry.

The 6,000-tonne vessel was built under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project at the Ship Building Centre in the port city of Visakhapatnam.
